so i watched terminator salvation this weekend and, you know, it wasn't really that bad. i heard a lot of people complain about it, but it wasn't even in the top three movies i'd seen in the last week (that would be transformers 2, g.i. joe, and the spirit). it was stupid, sure. but it was entertaining and the whole "human heart: the muscle that pumps blood"/"human heart: the will to survive" cliche didn't bother me as much as it probably should.

but how's this for an alternate ending: instead of the terminator/human hybrid giving john conner his heart, how about if, on his deathbed, john conner tells the terminator/human guy that now he has to be john conner and lead the resistance?

first of all, terminator/human guy (henceforth: thg) could pull it off because very few people know what john conner looks like. they just know his voice from the radio broadcasts. so thg could just do the terminator-voice-mimicking trick and no one would be the wiser.

secondly, thg actually seems like he could defeat skynet. john conner doesn't seem particularly special. he's just a soldier, really. but thg has all the terminator superpowers plus a bunch of inside information on skynet plus the ability to hack into the skynet system. john conner would have to get really lucky to beat skynet. but i think thg acting as john conner evens the playing field in the war between humans and skynet.

finally, given how bleak the movie is, it just seems appropriate that the prophecy about john conner being the savior of humanity isn't quite what it seems on the surface. sure, john conner will save humanity—just not john conner, son of sarah conner. that guy just kept the seat warm for the fake john conner who history will remember as the real john conner.

and while it would be sad to see john conner go, at the same time, let's just be honest: he was a little arrogant with that whole savior thing. i think i'd feel a lot better about him if he actually had to do something a little humbling like hand over the savior of humanity title to thg, someone who never wanted it.

plus, from a financial standpoint, i'll bet it would be easier to sign sam worthington than christian bale to subsequent sequels.

all this ignoring how insane it is to transplant the heart from a (relatively) healthy terminator/human hybrid into a dying guy with the distinct possibility that they both die and oh yeah, what about donor compatibility? kate is the worst doctor, ever.
